“Jimmy is a great vocal teacher. He tailors his lessons to my specific needs, which allows me to grow very quickly. He creates a relaxed lesson environment, which also helps, as I’m naturally shy. I feel he’s very experienced and effective. I’ve been getting great results from the beginning and can see myself under his tuition for years to come.” - Vinnie Minotto - Brazil
I can’t tell you how many times someone’s come up to me after a gig (and even during) and told me that they used to sing! Work, time, kids and just life gets in the way... I get that!
But with just a few lessons and with some regular practice, you’ll be be singing more in tune, have more control over your vocal range, and producing a better, deeper sound, giving you the confidence to sing anywhere with anyone.
This is what people say when they contact me:
‘I’ve always wanted to sing, but never had the courage’ ‘I don’t think I’m breathing properly’ ‘I need to sing backing vocals for a band I’m in, and can’t sing in tune’ ‘I’m a classically trained singer, but would like to learn how to sing in a Jazz style’ ‘I lack confidence when I have to perform in front of other people’ ‘I want to learn how to sing in my mixed voice’ ‘It feels tight in my throat when I sing and sometimes speak’ ‘I’d like a better singing technique to help me not feel like I’m pushing and using effort’
This is what people say after they’ve had a lesson with me:
“I enjoyed my lessons with Jimmy a lot thanks to his ability to make me understand what part of the body to use, how to hit notes with the right amount of breathe and find the possible timbres with different positioning and shapes of mouth. All of that with the useful tips on how to do it healthily to be able to sing as often as needed without straining the voice.” - Timothy Houle London
“Jimmy is a rare talent. generally the saying goes, if you can't do, teach. Jimmy is therefore someone who doesn't comply with this. He has amazing control over his voice and has the interpersonal skills and academic knowledge to be able to improve anyone lucky enough to be one of his students.” John Lunt - Real estate specialist at US Embassy.
“I really enjoyed the learning the new techniques you taught me to improve my understanding of the intervals. I sang the song the next night and it had improved greatly”. Sue Savage UK
“That was a lovely way to spend an hour on a Summer's morning. You have a lovely style. I enjoyed the exercises and the corporate singing. Great choice of song. So thank you.” Rev. Nigel Washington Bedfordshire
Since obtaining a PGDip in Jazz Performance from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and awarded the Archers Scholarship in 2002, Jimmy has continued to study Bel canto with Colin Baldy (New College Oxford), and uses this traditional vocal technique as the foundation for his performance and teaching, later studying with Kevin Burke (John Hendriks) in New York.
Within his various ensembles he explores various styles of singing including Jazz, Folk, Pop and the Anglo American resurgence, which he encourages his students to explore, believing that a rounded education and an understanding of stylistic fusion leads to individuality.
A Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), Jimmy is a strong advocate for music education and since 2007 has been the module leader for vocal performance on the BMus degree course at London College of Creative Media (LCCM), and is honoured to have recently joined the vocal department at Westminster University.
As session singer, Jimmy has recorded for Carlsberg, Bupa, Aardman films, Mcasso Music, Roger Taylor, and continues to write and arrange songs with other artistes and producers, including most recently producer and arranger Sean Hargreaves at Tileyard Music.
Jimmy’s strengths are in vocal technique and jazz improvisation.
